![]() Among these is a dried head, the only soft tissue of the dodo that remains today. ![]() In the 19th century, research was conducted on a small quantity of remains of four specimens that had been brought to Europe in the early 17th century. Its extinction was not immediately noticed, and some considered it to be a myth. ![]() The last widely accepted sighting of a dodo was in 1662. In the following years, the bird was hunted by sailors and invasive species, while its habitat was being destroyed. The first recorded mention of the dodo was by Dutch sailors in 1598. Though the dodo has historically been portrayed as being fat and clumsy, it is now thought to have been well-adapted for its ecosystem. It is presumed that the dodo became flightless because of the ready availability of abundant food sources and a relative absence of predators on Mauritius. One account states its clutch consisted of a single egg. It used gizzard stones to help digest its food, which is thought to have included fruits, and its main habitat is believed to have been the woods in the drier coastal areas of Mauritius. It has been depicted with brownish-grey plumage, yellow feet, a tuft of tail feathers, a grey, naked head, and a black, yellow, and green beak. Since these portraits vary considerably, and since only some of the illustrations are known to have been drawn from live specimens, the dodos' exact appearance in life remains unresolved, and little is known about its behaviour. The dodo's appearance in life is evidenced only by drawings, paintings, and written accounts from the 17th century. Subfossil remains show the dodo was about 1 metre (3 ft 3 in) tall and may have weighed 10.6–17.5 kg (23–39 lb) in the wild. A white dodo was once thought to have existed on the nearby island of Réunion, but it is now believed that this assumption was merely confusion based on the also-extinct Réunion ibis and paintings of white dodos. The closest living relative of the dodo is the Nicobar pigeon. The two formed the subfamily Raphinae, a clade of extinct flightless birds that were a part of the family which includes pigeons and doves. The dodo's closest genetic relative was the also-extinct Rodrigues solitaire. The dodo ( Raphus cucullatus) is an extinct flightless bird that was endemic to the island of Mauritius, which is east of Madagascar in the Indian Ocean.

“Finch” is practically a poster child for that latter category, the kind of film that delivers a bigger pop as an entry on Apple TV+’s playlist than it does on your screen. Studios have been fairly shrewd about which movies to hold until theatrical release became possible and which to sell to streaming services hungry for programming, especially with someone like Hanks to help promote it. Moreover, the underlying scenario is so bleak as to somewhat offset the lighter elements, despite the very good boy and robot that accompany him. The robot in ‘Finch’ is voiced by actor Caleb Landry Jones, who is known for films like ‘Get Out’ (2017) and ‘X-Men: First Class’ (2011). Most of the movie focuses on Finch and his companions struggling against the elements, forced to flee by unpredictable weather and massive storms while searching for places that “haven’t been ransacked or looted.”Īlong the way, Finch teaches Jeff how to drive (the robot insists he’s “an excellent driver,” inviting a “Rain Man” reference), tells stories that offer a modest window into his past and searches for canned food for man and beast.ĭirector Miguel Sapochnik ( “Game of Thrones”) does what he can to wring the maximum amount of emotion out of this unlikely trio, finding moments of tenderness and humor in their interactions. The robot (performed Caleb Landry Jones) takes the name Jeff, and like a number of recent projects, “Finch” winds up being an exploration not only of the man’s fight for survival but the machine’s dawning humanity, with Finch programming it to make caring for the dog, should anything happen to him, its prime directive. Indeed, although production wrapped before the pandemic, the premise – which casts Hanks as the title character, a robotics engineer by training, who survives an apocalypse (eventually explained) with only his dog and a newly operative robot – would have been ideal for shooting under Covid protocols with such a limited cast. Obsidian is also a very stable app in my experience, I've only ever had it crash a few times, and it was usually the cause of plugins, which even don't crash that much either. You can put in images, audio, files, anything, you can style every note to be exactly how you would imagine it, you can view a graph of all the links between your notes, you can create your own encyclopedia, your own personal knowledge base, your own second brain. Themes like Anuppuccin let you customize Obsidian to be exactly the way you would like it to be. Plugins like Memos let you write down quick notes, Crossbow lets you automatically find tags, and many more. Ever since I downloaded it, I've been putting all my knowledge in here, step by step, linking it together, and creating a second brain. Obsidian is well and truly a game changer. With all that - this is THE most valuable tool in the entire Apple ecosystem for my day-to-day work. In my opinion those are higher friction and I’d prefer other tools but if you are a bit technical and like tweaking on your own you will find those useful as well - beware that community plugins can be more hit or miss in the mobile version. Lot’s of available community add-ons provide a wide variety of options for task management, calendar integration, kanban, data analysis and much more. Best functionality is for knowledge management and longer form writing, for both of those it is a distinct pleasure to use. It has spoiled me for any other note app. Support for the developers is only through their publish and sync services, neither is required to use all the functions of the product. Free full functionality in a data format that guarantees you can never lose access to your work. The combination is incredible and the Obsidian developers provide huge value for free across multiple platforms. Have been using Obisidan in beta for the past year and in the mobile beta since its inception. Forget Roam, Logseq, any of the other imitators - Obsidian is your answer. If you need more than basic note tools will give you then this is it. But, the reason I feel so strongly about it, there is an UNENDING level of customizability that comes from the deeply dedicated community and their custom plugins and themes - which the developer personally reviews and approves. The app itself - amazing note taking app right out of the box that does not gate your data - take it and leave whenever you want. I enjoy the desktop version more than the mobile version, but based on the insane features they just dropped on the desktop version (0.16) - I know the mobile version will be perfect at some point. I have paid everything I can at the highest tier because this is my most used tool - but I didn’t really have to pay anything at all. They give you a million outs to not pay them a DIME. Ive also sent a review, sent an email, and called the salon within a week of receiving this service to get in touch with a manager, express my frustration, and request a refundall of which have yet to be acknowledged. I even had to book a manicure at a different salon to fix the one I received here. The manicure I ended up with was poorly shaped, had uneven edges, and angled too far upward, and cost me $50. I even acknowledged that there may have been a misunderstanding on my part, but I was made to feel so uncomfortable and unwelcome that I considered just walking out and cancelling the service entirely. When I stopped her, I received an aggressive reply, and then she argued that shed already told me she didnt have time to provide the service Id asked for. She even went so far as to try and provide a lesser service without asking me if thats what I wanted. Rather than doing some simple problem solving, her nail tech (who did not have an upcoming appointment) started her manicure right away, and my nail tech informed me upon arrival thatbecause I was running lateI couldnt get the manicure Id scheduled and asked for. The second was to win the Lash/Chronicle Tournament at the end of the month. One was to go undefeated which he says is a reach but they still want to strive for it. White says he sat down with his team and they came up with three goals for the year. He thinks that experience of playing last year coupled with playing AAU (Amateur Athletic Union) basketball over the summer has given them a leg up. Walkertown returns five sophomores from last year’s team that have become starters this year. “I think the kids are really buying in to what I believe in to get better as a team and a program,” said White. He says they really are trying to rebuild the program at the school but knows it starts with the freshman and JV level. Sitting at 3-0, White says he feels that the kids are playing harder than he initially anticipated to start the season. I will say North Forsyth is well coached and they are a really great team.” We just got some key stops in the fourth quarter to seal the deal. “The game was great and both teams played very hard in my opinion,” said White.
